With regard to the economical further treatment and disposal of sewage sludge, it is necessary to reduce the sludge volumes produced within the course of the wastewater treatment process. This volume reduction is achieved by the separation of parts of the sludge liquor at different points within the sludge treatment process chain. The main field of application for thickening systems is volume reduction of primary and excess sludge prior to stabilisation.
