A tank, e.g. a septic tank, and our Membrane ClearBox are essentially all that is needed for a compact MBR system. The tank has a minimum of two, preferably three compartments: The first one or two compartments serve for sedimentation of primary sludge and scum removal. The last compartment, where a Vacuum Upstream Membrane VUM is installed, serves as biological reactor and has a mixed liquor (activated sludge concentration) of up to 20,000 ppm (20 g/l). The Mambrane ClearBox includes a package of ultra-filtration membranes (VUM), a pump for drawing the crystal clear effluent through the membranes, a blower for air scouring to prevent membrane fouling, another blower for fine bubble aeration, and controls.
